Recently, with the quick spread of all kinds of media and entertainments such as the internet, the TV, the film, and meanwhile people’s working pressure has been increasing, thus fewer people now have enough time to read. Many students almost give up reading immediately after they enter into collage and no longer have to suffer the pressure generated in the college entrance examination; some graduates give up the habit of reading when they take a job. The books on the top lists sold on the bookshops are usually the "how-to” books which teach people practical skills in dealing with the daily problem such as how to keep fit, how to nourish children, how to make money etc instead of the literature works which can enrich people’s spiritual world. This is rather disturbing and deserves the attention of the whole nation because one should know that books are no less necessary to one’s mental life than fresh air is to one’s physical life. A great master has once told us that books are the ladders leading people to greater progress. If people have to take in food to survive physically, then the human beings have to take in knowledge to survive psychologically and definitely, mere scientific knowledge is far from enough. People need to nourish their spirit with literature works as a civilized species. Only by reading can people take in the humane knowledge. From good reading people nourish a better understanding of themselves, of the world. They can derive companionship, experience and instruction and learn how to conduct themselves as civilized social members. To a human being, a good book is most helpful and faithful friend. It can increase people’s contentment when they are cheerful and happy, and alleviate their pain when they are in low spirit and feel lonely. Books can also offer people a wide range of experience which they may not have the chance to undergo themselves. Few of people can travel far from home to know other places in person or live long over the age 100, but they can learn about other places and other people with the help of reading. What’s more, reading books can develop people’s intellectual ability, broaden their minds and make them wiser. So although people now have more choices to get information and kill times than their ancestors, nothing can replace the role that books play in their lives.
